Animal and Plant Cell Definitions

1. Cell Membrane- the outermost living structure of a cell.
a. It controls the passage of materials into and out of the cell.
2. Vacuole- liquid-filled sacs that store materials that the cell has taken in or produced.
3. Nuclear Membrane – the outermost part of the nucleus.
4. Cytoplasm – the material in the cell that surrounds the nucleus. It carries out most of the activities in the cell.
5. Cell wall – it is a rigid material, that is nonliving. It protects all of the living parts of the plant cell.
6. Chloroplasts- small green bodies; where photosynthesis occurs.
7. Nucleolus- a round body containing protein. It sends messages to the cytoplasm.
8. Chromatin- made up of very fine coiled threads. Before cell division and reproduction – they shorten and thicken into rods called Chromosomes.
9. Mitochondrion- oblong structure scattered in the cytoplasm. They produce energy for the cell. Sometimes called the Powerhouse of the cell.
10. Nucleus- round body near the middle of the cell; contains genes, which control all cell activity.
11. Centriole- a pair of small organelles near the nucleus. They assist in cell division.
